It Is just about 9PM and all 3 babies are fast asleep. Which means there is some time to sit down and chat about my latest read. Sunday’s on the Phone to Monday by Christine Reilly. This one took me awhile to get through. A couple factors played into this. Well, I had a baby! I typically read at night when I climb into bed. But with a sweet little baby sleeping an inch from my bed and an inch from my bedside lamp, I felt bad turning the lamp on. But this was also just a tough read. This book didn’t have the best flow so it didn’t necessarily keep me engaged.
Once you get to the end, it definitely pulls at your heart strings slightly. But the characters don’t feel developed enough. There isn’t that typical connection to the characters that you get in most fiction. The storyline follows an “unusual” family. I think the book description uses the term unusual a little too loosely. But nevertheless, it follows this family and their ups and downs over a series of years. But despite reading about various parts of their lives, I felt like I didn’t really get to know any of the characters. The writing style is very poetic. And I don’t mean that in the way people say it to express how something is so beautiful. This book is literally written as if it is a poem. And not the kind of poem I particularly care for.
It just wasn’t an engrossing book to me. The story line could have been interesting. But it is completely muddled in all the prose. With the lack of development of the characters and general details of the book, it is hard to focus on the storyline. It was surprising how much I didn’t like it. I feel like I am a pretty easy customer. It is shocking how many good reviews there are out there for this book! I wouldn’t recommend this one. Overall, I think I would give it a 2.5 stars out of 5. Not terrible but not great either. If you’ve read Sunday’s on the Phone to Monday let me know your thoughts in the comments.
